Dear Colleague,

Next week, the Summer Short Course for Earth System Modeling and Supercomputing will begin at NASA Ames Research Center. You are invited to view any of the lectures in the short course via Adobe Connect.

Course times and dates: Monday, July 16 - Friday, July 27, 2012, 9-5 PDT

Agenda and Adobe Connect info: see https://c3.nasa.gov/nex/projects/1298/

The course, designed for Earth science Ph.D. students and early-career scientists, is on the themes of global climate modeling/land interactions, terrestrial ecosystem modeling, Earth observation and data analysis using high end computing resources.

The topics will include:
- The NASA Earth Exchange
- The Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS)
- Long-term monitoring from satellites, trends and variability
- Parallelism in Earth science modeling and data analysis codes
- Managing data in the High End Computing environment
- “Big data” at NASA and beyond
- Tools for workflow construction and data visualization
- Programming frameworks

A number of distinguished scientists including Piers Sellers (NASA), Randy Koster (NASA), Bala Govindasamy (IISc, India) Dave Schimel (NEON), Compton Tucker (NASA), Ranga Myneni (Boston U), John Townshend (U of Maryland), Steve Running (U of Montana), Vipin Kumar (U of Minnesota) and Balaji Rajagopalan (U of Colorado) are on-deck to talk about their careers, progress in Earth system science over the past 30 years and the way ahead.
