Description
TIFF files do not appear in any dialog of ArcGIS and appear not to be a recognized file format.
Cause
The cause of this can vary widely, from a bad installation to a DLL conflict between ArcGIS and other software.

Instructions provided are to reset the environment variables and the registry to perform a clean installation of ArcGIS. Old files or .dll's in the registry are removed. This process is performed on all local drives.

Procedure |
Follow the steps below to cleanly reinstall ArcGIS 8.3.
 The steps below DO NOT apply to ArcGIS 9.0. ArcGIS 9.0 does not have the /cleanup switch. To run repair on an ArcGIS 9.0 installation, go to Add/Remove programs, find ArcGIS Desktop, click the Change button and select 'Repair'.
- Uninstall ArcGIS Desktop and Workstation versions, by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Remove the entries for ArcGIS Desktop and ArcInfo Workstation.
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to the 'arcgis' folder and delete it.
- Reboot the computer.
- Place ArcGIS Desktop CD in the CD-ROM drive.
- Close the Auto-Install window.
- Click Start > Run.
- Type the command:
 Be certain to type a space character after the word 'setup'.
- Click OK; the installation begins.
- Reboot and log in with the same administrative privileges.
- To install ArcGIS Workstation in addition to ArcGIS Desktop, place the ArcGIS Workstation CD into the CD-ROM drive. Installation will automatically engage.
- Reboot and log in with the same administrative privileges.

Disregard the version mentioned in the Cleanup instructions as the install is the same for all versions.
-- If the clean reinstall does not resolve the problem it is possible there is a DLL conflict. You can obtain the Service Pack in the link below: ESRI Support Center > Downloads > Patches and Service Packs. Click ArcView 8.x, and find ArcGIS 8.2 Service Pack 1.
