Some Compositions for Reference

(部分预测题参考文)

1. Terrorism and World Peace

Directions: Read the following material and write a composition of about 200 words on “world peace and anti-terrorism” .

On September 11, terrorists attacked New York and Washington, causing great damage and casualties, which panicked the United States and shocked the whole world. Soon the U. S. began to retaliate the suspects in Afghanistan by large-scale air attack. This resulted in the ruin of cities and death of thousands of people in this poverty-stricken country. At the same time people in the U. S. are still living in panic, fearing that the terrorists will strike again in retaliation.

Your writing should include:

2. your comment on the incident;

3. your opinion on terrorism and;

3. your suggestions for safeguarding world peace. (20 points)

The hijacker attacks in the United States were great tragedies in human history. It is understandable for the U. S. to take actions to punish the plotters. Terrorism should be condemned and countered, as it is not only very destructive but also disturbing, keeping people worried all the time and unable to enjoy peaceful life. The expansion of terrorism will certainly disorder social life, obstruct economic development and cause unrest all over the world.

However, is it sufficiently justified to punish a whole country just because some people in it are suspected to have committed crimes? Is violence a good choice in the fight against terrorist violence? History and our daily experience seem to indicate that the answer is negative. The endless conflicts in Middle East, the long lasting fight in the Balkans and the repeated tribe slaughters in Africa all seem to suggest that violence can lead to more violence instead of peace.

Then what shall we do to prevent violence, to stop fighting, and counter terrorism? Most conflicts, quarrels arise from differences and misunderstanding. Each nation has its own beliefs, traditions and customs, which deserve respect from others, whether it is small or big, powerful or weak. When we are generous and benevolent enough to allow so-called heresy to exist, to tolerate others’ small faults and pardon their inadvertent offences, and when we are patient enough to erase misunderstanding through negotiation instead of fighting, the world will be much more peaceful, if not completely safe.

2. Globalization

With the advancement of technology in transportation and communication, the world seems to be getting smaller and smaller. The trend is termed globalization.

In economy one big world market is coming into being, on which each nation will observe the same rules to do business and to share the benefits. In politics and social life, there are more communication and contacts between different countries and areas. People at one end of the world can very soon be informed of what happens at the other. Things that occur all over the world now seem to be in our neighborhood. Globalization makes goods that used to be unimaginable in our life available now. Natural resources and labor resource are able to circle around the globe and better used. Prices of many goods will be more reasonable and life would be more convenient.

However, each coin has two sides. While enjoying the benefit brought by globalization, we are also faced with some problems. The trend is eliminating things unique to some areas. More and more traditions in developing countries will be lost under the powerful influence from western world. The world tends to be turned quite universal, where everything will be similar to everything else, which might be quite dull and monotonous.

3. Opportunity and Success

Directions: In 2002 World Cup Final, Chinese football team failed all the three games, scoring no goal, and returned home, making all the enthusiastic fans miserable in silence. Yet, when we obtained the qualification to the Final, many of us were as optimistic as we were for Beijing’s success in bidding hosting 2008 Olympic Games and China’s entry to WTO. How would you comment on this? Write an essay entitled “Opportunity and Success”. Your writing should be based on the following requirements.

1. Describe and interpret the pictures below (Picture 1: Chinese football fans cheering when the team won a key game and entered the World Cup Finals; Picture 2: after the game with Brazil/Turkey, Chinese players were leaving the playground, exhausted and depressed)

2. Give your comment on the relationship between opportunity and success in terms of the situation of China.

We have every reason to celebrate what we have achieved in 2001 when China became a member of WTO after years of negotiations; Beijing succeeded in bidding for 2008 Olympics and China Football Team entered World Cup Finals for the first time in the history. These are indications of China’s progress as well as great opportunities for further development. Hosting Olympics is a good chance to promote the development of Beijing and introduce China to the world; entry to WTO may accelerate our economy development and modernization. In a word, there is a great opportunity for China.

However, opportunity does not equal success. It is also a challenge. This has been proved by the failures of the football team. Similarly, hosting Olympics and entry to WTO are just opportunity, not final goals. That we entered WTO does not prove we have become as strong as the western powers; instead, we are only beginners, just like our football team which still has a long way to go before it can match with the strong ones in the world. It is true that there will be less trade barriers for us on the world market; better, cheaper goods will surge in, bringing benefit to the people; more foreign companies and agencies will be established in China, offering more job opportunities, relieving unemployment problem. Meanwhile strong foreign competition is a great threat to our national and private businesses, bringing them risk of going bankrupt. So we must be clear that opportunity and challenge go hand in hand and bear in mind that it is dangerous to be blindly optimistic as we did for our football team.

Nonetheless, we have no reason to be over-worried and pessimistic as we have the opportunities and this is hope and a start for success. We will not stop advancing or give up the opportunity because there is risk and difficulties in front of us. On the contrary, we will take advantage of the opportunity and work hard to achieve our success. With the lessons from the football team and with our efforts we will be well prepared and successfully host the 2008 Olympic Games, and China will become one of the strongest nations in WTO.

4. The Problem in Learning English

English has been important for many years in the world due to the great influence from some English-speaking countries. We learn English for a variety of purposes. Some want to go abroad and English is a necessary means of living. Others want to pass certain examinations so as to gain the qualifications concerned.

No matter for what purpose people are learning English, there is one concern shared by almost all: how to learn English well as soon as possible and to make it as easy as possible. To meet the requirement, many training classes appear, some of which claim that English in their classes will be made so easy that most of their trainees will become masters of the language after two or three months training. If you are going to pass certain examinations the classes may be helpful enough. But if you are expecting to master English by attending such short-term training classes, you will certainly be disappointed. English is not learned in this way.

More haste, less speed. English is learned step by step. You can learn and remember thousands of new words and much grammatical knowledge in a short period, say two months, but you can’t really understand and use all of them correctly. It may be as quick to forget them as you learn them. For many of those who have passed certain examinations, their English is still problematical. Their writings are still full of mistakes and they still find it difficult to express themselves in English. If you want to really master English, get ready to study hard. No pains, no gains.
